Older home owners get a breather on property tax in Govan Mbeki Municipality
Party is pleased with municipality's decision.
The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) in Govan Mbeki Municipality is celebrating a major victory following the approval of its motion to implement a property tax rebate for elderly residents.
According to Aranda Buitendag-Nel, a VF Plus councillor, the council’s decision marks a significant step toward easing the financial burden on some of the community’s most vulnerable citizens.
“The VF Plus tabled a motion in January to enable elderly property owners to apply for and receive discounts on their property taxes,” said Buitendag-Nel.
“We are pleased that this motion was approved during the recent council meeting, where the Integrated Development Plan (IDP) and related policies were also adopted.
The rebate will apply to eligible residents across the Govan Mbeki municipal area, including Bethal, Charl Cilliers, eMbalenhle, Evander, Kinross, Leandra, Secunda, Trichardt, and eMzinoni.”
Buitendag-Nel explained that elderly residents who have not yet applied for the rebate still have the opportunity to do so.
“Applications must be submitted before the first of each month to qualify for the rebate in the next billing cycle.”
To qualify, applicants must be 60 years or older and be the registered owner and full-time occupant of the property.
