Dam levels continue to drop across province
The average dam levels in Mpumalanga have dropped to 98.9%. The DWS urges water conservation.
The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) released its weekly state of reservoirs report on July 16, calling on residents to step up their water conservation efforts.
Average dam levels in Mpumalanga have slightly decreased from 99.0% to 98.9%, prompting renewed appeals from the department for responsible water usage.
In the Gert Sibande District, the average level dipped from 96.5% to 96.4%, with individual dams reflecting a mix of changes: Nooitgedacht Dam dropped from 100.0% to 99.8%; Jericho Dam saw a significant decline from 99.0% to 89.2%; Westoe Dam fell from 90.7% to 89.6%.
Only one dam in the district showed improvement: Vygeboom Dam increased slightly from 100.0% to 100.1%.Three dams remained stable: Grootdraai Dam at 99.9%; Morgenstond Dam at 100.2%; Heyshope Dam at 100.3%.
Wisane Mavasa, spokesperson for the DWS, emphasised the importance of saving water.
“Every drop counts in South Africa, which is among the 30 driest countries in the world,” she said.
The DWS urges all citizens to use water responsibly to help ensure long-term water sustainability.
