Dam levels show mixed results in Gert Sibande District
The DWS released their weekly state of reservoirs report, detailing the most recent water levels in the Gert Sibande District
The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) released its latest State of Reservoirs report on July 24, detailing water usage across Mpumalanga.
The department urged continued water conservation, citing mixed results in dam levels within the Gert Sibande District.
The average dam levels across Mpumalanga dropped slightly from 98.9% to 98.7%. In the Gert Sibande District, the average declined from 96.3% to 95.9%.
The only dam in the district to show a slight improvement was Nooitgedacht Dam, which increased from 99.8% to 100.0%. Vygeboom Dam remained stable at 100.1%, along with Morgenstond Dam at 100.2% and Heyshope Dam at 100.3%.
Other dams recorded drops: Grootdraai Dam declined from 99.9% to 99.6%; Jericho Dam fell from 98.2% to 97.6%; Westoe Dam dropped from 89.6% to 87.6%.
The DWS reminded the public that South Africa is a water-scarce country and every drop counts.
“Water conservation remains the most effective way to ensure water security for current and future generations,” said Wisane Mavasa, spokesperson for the DWS.
