Civil Movement demands action against Govan Mbeki Municipality councillor following nightclub shooting

GMF spokesperson Ntokozo Mthembu described the incident as “disturbing” and called for Mbokazi’s immediate suspension.

The Govan Mbeki First (GMF), a local civil movement, has raised concerns after an incident involving ANC Ward 29 councillor and MMC for Civil Engineering at Govan Mbeki Municipality, Aron Mbokazi.

Mbokazi allegedly fired multiple shots at police officers outside a popular nightclub in Secunda on the night of August 14. While no fatalities were reported, one person was injured during the crossfire. Mbokazi was later arrested and released on R1 000 bail.

GMF spokesperson Ntokozo Mthembu described the incident as “disturbing” and called for Mbokazi’s immediate suspension.

“We demand ethics, fairness and openness. We call on the executive mayor of Govan Mbeki Municipality to act without favour. Mbokazi must be removed from the Mayoral Committee and suspended until his case is heard in court,” said Mthembu.

He also urged community members affected by the incident to come forward and report to the police.

“There is no political leader bigger than the law or above the community of this municipality. Public officials must uphold the highest levels of integrity as they represent the people,” he added.

Mthembu stressed that GMF would closely monitor the case and expose any political interference that may arise. Mpumalanga police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane confirmed the incident, explaining that it began with an altercation among patrons at the nightclub, which escalated into gunfire.

Ndubane noted that Mbokazi appeared at the Secunda Magistrate’s Court on 18 August, where he was granted bail. He was expected to reappear in court on 25 August, facing charges of attempted murder, but Ridge Times found out  the case has been removed from the roll.
