Provincial dam levels are stable at 94%

The Department of Water and Sanitation urges water conservation as dam levels in certain areas continue to decrease.

The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) released its weekly State of Reservoirs report on October 10, detailing a slight decline in water levels across Mpumalanga.

According to the report, average provincial water levels remain stable at 94%.

In the Gert Sibande district, the only dam to record a decline was Westoe Dam, which fell from 68.8% to 67.5%. Grootdraai Dam remained unchanged at 95.1%, Morgenstond Dam stayed at 100.5%, and Heyshope Dam remained at 100.3%.

Three dams in the district showed positive results. Nooitgedacht Dam increased slightly from 93.6% to 93.9%, Vygeboom Dam rose from 98.0% to 98.3%, and Jericho Dam showed a positive increase from 90.8% to 91.4%.

Wisane Mavasa, spokesperson for the DWS, urged residents to continue using water wisely and sparingly.

“The department encourages the public to practice rainwater harvesting on rainy days to reduce the strain on municipal supply,” concluded Mavasa.
