Dam levels remain above 90% despite slight declines

Grootdraai Dam recorded a marginal decrease from 94.8% to 94.2%.

The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) recently released its weekly state of reservoirs report on October 22, indicating that all listed dams in the Gert Sibande District recorded declines in water levels.

According to Themba Khoza, spokesperson for the DWS, despite the slight decreases, most dams still remain above the 90% mark.

Westoe Dam currently displays the lowest water levels, dropping from 66.1% to 64.4%. Grootdraai Dam recorded a marginal decrease from 94.8% to 94.2%, while Nooitgedacht Dam decreased slightly from 93.2% to 93.1%.

Vygeboom Dam fell from 98.5% to 97.8%, and Jericho Dam declined from 90.8% to 90.0%.

Khoza noted that Morgenstond Dam and Heyshope Dam remain above 100%, with Morgenstond decreasing slightly from 100.4% to 100.2%, and Heyshope dropping from 100.3% to 100.2%.

The report also indicated that overall provincial water levels have decreased from 93.7% to 93.1%.

“Despite these minor declines and the generally satisfactory levels, the DWS reminds the public that South Africa is a water-scarce country,” stated Khoza.

The department urges residents to practice water conservation, including rainwater harvesting during rainy days.
