Local archers triumph at AGA Nationals in Polokwane

Mpumalanga Archery coordinator, Ryk Gagiano, said the local archers have put the province on the map as a “powerhouse” in SA archery.

Local archers from Teks Archery Club, Krielpark, Laerskool Trichardt, and Hoërskool Hoogenhout were part of the Mpumalanga teams that delivered a stellar performance at the Archery South Africa (AGA) Nationals, held in Polokwane from October 7 to 11.

Archers showcased exceptional talent, securing multiple podium finishes in both individual and team events. Competing fiercely against top teams from across the country, Mpumalanga’s archers demonstrated skill, precision, and dedication.

The AGA Nationals kicked off on October 7 with intense competition as provincial teams vied for top spots. Mpumalanga’s young archers, particularly the Cubs (grades two to three), set the tone by clinching first, second, and third places in their respective categories.

The Mpumalanga Primary Schools team maintained the momentum, finishing an impressive third overall in South Africa, while the Mpumalanga High School A team also excelled, securing third place nationally, a testament to their teamwork and commitment.

However, the province’s proudest moment came when the Mpumalanga Development team was crowned national champions, claiming first place overall. This victory highlighted the strength and potential of the province’s up-and-coming archers.

A standout individual performance came from Zander Booysen, captain of the High School A team and archer from Hoërskool Hoogenhout in Bethal.

Booysen was crowned the 2025 National Champion in both Bull’s Eye (BE) and 3D combined events. His exceptional marksmanship and leadership were pivotal to the team’s success.

The AGA also hosted the Inter-Schools and Clubs Championships from October 10 to 11, where private clubs and school teams competed in Bull’s Eye and 3D formats. Mpumalanga’s teams continued to excel, showcasing versatility and competitive spirit against strong opponents.

“We are incredibly proud of our archers’ achievements. Their hard work, discipline, and passion have put our province on the map as a powerhouse in South African archery,” said Ryk Gagiano, Mpumalanga Archery coordinator.

The AGA Nationals not only highlighted Mpumalanga’s talent but also underscored the growing popularity of archery in the region. With such remarkable performances, the future looks bright for Mpumalanga’s archers as they continue to aim for greatness.
