Operation Shanela launches phase 2 in Standerton
The campaign is a continuous effort aimed at promoting cleanliness, eradicating illegal dumping, and encouraging the community to take pride in maintaining their surroundings.
The Lekwa Local Municipality (LLM) commenced phase two of Operation Shanela on October 16, starting in Ward 12.
The operation was led by MMC for Budget and Treasury and Ward 12 councillor, Thabang Motaung.
According to Lubabalo Majenge, spokesperson for the LLM, the campaign is a continuous effort aimed at promoting cleanliness, eradicating illegal dumping, and encouraging the community to take pride in maintaining their surroundings.
“The initiative also aims to restore community dignity, improve public health standards, and create a safe, welcoming environment for all residents,” stated Majenge.
During his address, Motaung highlighted the improvements brought about by the first phase of Operation Shanela. “The first phase of this operation was a success, and we are proud of the progress made,” he said.
He explained that the campaign is moving to the rural outskirts of the municipality to ensure all communities benefit, noting that rural residents also have the right to enjoy cleanliness and service delivery.
Motaung emphasised that this is not a short-term cleaning activity, but a long-term commitment towards sustainable environmental management.
“The programme encourages collective participation, with government departments, residents, community groups, and municipal employees working together to remove litter, clear illegal dumpsites, and beautify public spaces,” he said.
Majenge concluded by stating that Phase 2 marks another significant milestone in the LLM’s ongoing efforts to promote a cleaner, healthier, and more inclusive environment.
“The municipality calls on all residents to actively maintain the campaign’s results and uphold cleanliness as a shared benefit for all communities.”
