Recent rainfall boosts dam levels

Grootdraai Dam increased from 95.0% to 104.5%.

The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) released the weekly state of reservoirs report on November 19. Recent rainfall has had a positive impact on average dam levels across Mpumalanga.

According to the report compiled by Wisane Mavasa, spokesperson for the DWS, most listed dams showed increases in water levels, while only a handful recorded declines.

The report shows that water levels in Gert Sibande have increased from 95.4% to 99.0%. The Grootdraai Dam increased from 95.0% to 104.5%. It was at 100% capacity on November 16, and one sluice gate was opened.

The most recent update indicated that it was at 100.97% on November 20. The sluice gate was reduced from 1.5m to 0.5m.

The Nooitgedacht Dam increased from 94.3% to 97.8%, the Vygeboom Dam from 97.2% to 99.1%, and the Jericho and Heyshope dams from 88.3% to 89.2% and 100.2% to 103.6%, respectively.

“Despite the improved water levels, residents should continue using water wisely and sparingly,” stated Mavasa.
