Family from eMzinoni pleads for lasting solution to flooding and structural damage
he absence of a proper drainage system has resulted in uncontrolled water flow, leading to flooding and erosion around their home.
The Mahlangu family from eMzinoni is concerned about the unresolved issues affecting their home, which they claim stem from the Govan Mbeki Municipality’s (GMM) failure to provide proper stormwater drainage and maintain roads in their area.
According to a family member, Themba Mahlangu, repeated heavy rainfall over the years has caused severe damage to their property.
“Despite previous engagements with the municipality, including assurances that they would build a bridge and grate the street nothing has been done,” said Mahlangu.
He said the absence of a proper drainage system has resulted in uncontrolled water flow, leading to flooding and erosion around their home. This, he added, has weakened the house’s foundation and created an unsafe living environment.
Mahlangu was also concerned about their mother, who lives with chronic illnesses and is vulnerable to the dampness and poor conditions caused by persistent flooding.
He further stated that although the municipality previously indicated that they would process the insurance claims to assist with the damage, the family has received no communication or support.

With the rainy season now beginning, the family fears further destruction of their property and potential risks to their health and safety.
GMM media liaison and content developer Donald Green confirmed that the municipality was aware of the Mahlangu family’s complaints.
“The GMM has taken temporary measures by lowering the road surface with a grader. The municipality re-gravelled the entire road to make it trafficable and cleaned the earth channel to allow water to flow to the stream. Further, the GMM installed a 450mm concrete pipe to assist the water flow.
“This is a short-term measure due to limited funding,” said Green.
Green added that the municipality’s long-term plan is to redirect stormwater away from the Mahlangu family’s home and properly repair the affected road.
The long-term project will be included in the 2026/27 financial year, as it was not previously listed in the GMM’s Integrated Development Plan.
