Armed men rob taverns

Police warn liquor outlet owners in eMbalenhle

The eMbalenhle Police warned the owners of liquor outlets to be more vigilant.

This comes after two taverns in the area were robbed by a group of armed men on December 26 and 27.

According to Sergeant Busi Mthethwa, spokesperson of eMbalenhle Police, in one incident, a tarven owner, who is a woman, was attacked by five men armed with fire-arms while she was closing her tarven.
Sergeant Mthethwa said the men demanded cash but the woman asked them why they wanted money again as they took money from her the week before.

One of the suspects allegedly assaulted her with a fire-arm, by hitting her in the face with it, got inside of her house and stole money and two cell phones.

He then forced open the tavern and stole alcohol as well.

Sergeant Mthethwa said a business robbery case was opened and is still under investigation.

No arrests have been made yet.
According to Sergeant Mthethwa in another incident, a tarven owner was asleep when four men, armed with fire-arms entered his business through the wall.
The suspects then allegedly demanded cash from the man but he told them that he does not have money.

They then used a hot iron to to burn his body and left without taking anything.
Sergeant Mthethwa said an attempted business robbery case was opened and the investigation continues.

“eMbalenhle Police has noted with serious concern the sharp increase in business robberies, particularly targeting liquor outlets, during the current festive season,” said Sergeant Mthethwa.
“Thus we want to warn business owners to strictly comply with prescribed trading and closing times.

“Failure to comply will result in immediate law enforcement action, including inspections, fines, and possible closure of non-compliant premises.”

She urged business owners to urgently enhance security measures, including CCTV systems, alarm systems, adequate lighting, and access control to minimise criminal activities.

“As eMbalenhle Police we want to state categorically that criminality will not be tolerated.

“Individuals involved in business robberies will be traced, arrested, and brought before the courts.
“We further warn that murder remains a priority crime.

“No individual has the right to take another person’s life.

“Those who commit murder will face the full might of the law, with no leniency.”

She said the police strongly condemns all forms of assault.

“We are seriously concerned about the growing trend where suspects assault victims in an attempt to force them to withdraw criminal cases by intimidating them or offering them money.

“The eMbalenhle Police are aware of these practices.

“Such conduct constitutes a criminal offence and will be investigated.

“Both perpetrators and those attempting to interfere with the course of justice will be arrested and charged accordingly.,”

The eMbalenhle Police called upon all business owners and the community to cooperate with law enforcement, report criminal activities without delay, and refrain from any actions that undermine the criminal justice system.
“Safety of our communities remain our priority and we will continue to intensify operations throughout the festive season to ensure law and order,” said Sergeant Mthethwa.
