Trio in mob-justice case get free bail in Evander

Sicelo Siwela, Vathiswa Duba and Nhlakanipho Zwane were arrested in January in connection with the death of Wonder Vilakazi.

The Evander Magistrate’s Court on February 4 released a trio linked to mob-justice over the assault and murder of Wonder Vilakazi in eMbalenhle’s Ext 18 last July.

Sicelo Siwela, Vathiswa Duba and Nhlakanipho Zwane were arrested in January.

Vilakazi had been accused of stealing copper pipes from one suspect’s homes. He was allegedly assaulted and later died from his injuries.

The case has divided the Ext 18 community. Some residents urged the court to deny bail, saying the suspects should have opened a SAPS case if Vilakazi had committed a crime, not take the law into their own hands.

Others supported the accused.

Community members also submitted a petition to the court opposing bail. Despite these objections, the trio was granted free bail, and the matter was postponed to March 13.
