Transport Minister Barbara Creecy officially launched the National Truck Stop Framework (NTSF) at the N17 Truck Stop on September 17, outlining a national roadmap for the planning, classification, investment and standardisation of truck stops across South Africa.

The framework aims to provide provinces, municipalities, state-owned entities and private developers with practical guidance to better align truck-stop infrastructure with freight movements, corridor demands, driver needs and road-safety considerations.

Delivering the welcoming address, Govan Mbeki Municipality Executive Mayor Nhlakanipho Zuma highlighted the strategic importance of freight transportation to the local and national economy.

Zuma also emphasised Govan Mbeki Municipality’s position within South Africa’s energy economy, saying the municipality’s strategic location makes it an important hub for the country’s energy sector.

“Transportation of goods becomes very fundamental for our economy. Govan Mbeki Municipality is strategically placed on the basis that it remains the hub of energy for the country,” said Zuma.

He said the municipality’s energy role extends beyond electricity to include the broader energy value chain, including fuels and other commodities produced, processed or transported through the municipal area.

Zuma further stressed the need to strengthen road and freight infrastructure to support economic activity while improving road safety, protecting communities and preserving the country’s road infrastructure.

The launch of the NTSF is intended to provide a more coordinated approach to the development of truck stops and ensure that infrastructure along major freight corridors responds to the needs of the transport sector and the communities through which these corridors pass.
