Law enforcers shake down Delmas’ main street

One suspect, a street vendor, fled when he became aware of the arrival of the law enforcement officers.

Stakeholders in a multi-disciplinary team conducted sting operations in Delmas on Friday, August 26.

The team consisted of members from the Delmas Police (Visible Policing and Detective units), police members from the district office, immigration officers from the Department of Home Affairs and AAA Security Company.

Their main focus was Sarel Cilliers Street and Botleng.

Seven undocumented people between 23 and 35 were arrested for contravention of the immigration act.

The suspect is said to have left some items, including 187 schedule four tablets, some of which are antibiotics.

Other items that the suspect abandoned in the street include hats and wallets.

As part of the success of the operations, five suspects between the ages of 22 and 33 were arrested for the possession of illegal substances (drugs).

Several items were seized, including 36 small zip lock bags stashed with dagga, 10 sachets containing what appears to be rock cocaine, and 33 sachets compressed with suspected heroin.

The Provincial Commissioner of police in Mpumalanga, Lieut-Gen Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, applauded the team spirit displayed by the law enforcement agencies.

Several seized items, including 36 small zip lock bags stashed with dagga,10 suspected rock cocaine and 33 sachets compressed with suspected heroin.

“The public should expect more such operations, especially now that the winter is coming to an end.

“This is normally a period where the movement of people after hours is expected to rise.

“It is during these times when criminals also take advantage and target their victims.

“We will be jointly increasing our crime prevention activities to mitigate the challenges. We will not allow any criminality in the province,” said Lieut-Gen Manamela.

At the time of going to print, the suspects were expected to appear in the Delmas District Court on Monday, August 29.
