Police in Bethalare investigating a case of hijacking that happened on the evening of July 9 on the R544 road between Bethal and Witbank.

According to Bethal police spokesperson Sergeant Thomas Mogadime, it’s alleged that the driver of a company truck (white Volvo), was heading towards Bethal when he felt the truck’s wheels were binding. He tried to reverse the truck and used the mirrors to see what the obstruction was.

The truck driver then stopped and got out of the truck to investigate.

“While he was outside the truck, seven men, wearing balaclavas, came out of nowhere. One of the suspects pointed a firearm and threatened to kill the victim if he did not comply,” said Mogadime.

The victim was taken into the bushes. Both his hands and feet were tied with wires.

The suspects took the victim’s cellphone and R400 which he had in his possession. An amount of R5 000 was also transferred out of the victim’s bank account.

The suspects fled the scene with the truck, leaving the victim in the bushes. He escaped uninjured.

“The victim was helped by a passing motorist who took him to the police station to report the matter. A case was opened and is being investigated,” said Mogadime.
