Former Secunda Home Affairs officials’ fraud case transferred to Evander

The Secunda Magistrate’s Court has, on July 13, transferred the fraud case involving former Secunda Home Affairs officials Portia Mtshweni (41) and Nondumiso Maboyi (40) to the Evander Regional Court.

Mtshweni and Maboyi are facing charges of fraud after investigators alleged that South African identity documents were unlawfully issued to four Zimbabwean nationals and one Mozambican national.

In addition, a Zimbabwean child allegedly received a fraudulent South African birth certificate, while the child’s mother reportedly obtained a South African identity document through fraudulent means.

Mtshweni was arrested on April 30, while Maboyi later handed herself over to the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation Unit in Secunda.

According to the allegations, the pair assisted in the fraudulent issuance of South African identity documents and birth certificates to foreign nationals.

The two accused were previously granted bail of R3 000 each in May.

However, they were subsequently re-arrested in connection with another case involving alleged fraud and corruption related to the processing of identity documents.

The Secunda Magistrate’s Court granted them bail of R7 000 each on July 1. The matter will now proceed before the Evander Regional Court on October 26.
