A woman hitchhiking from Kinross to Leandra on September 21 was robbed of her cellphone and then dumped in the veld along the road to Ogies.

According to Constable Cebisile Mlambo, Kinross Police spokesperson, the woman was apparently asking for a ride at the Kinross four-way stop on the R29 towards Leandra when a white VW Polo with several occupants stopped.

The driver offered the woman a lift to Leandra which she accepted.

When the vehicle passed the exit to Ext 25 in Kinross, the suspect pointed a gun at the woman.

He demanded her cellphone and money.

The motorist then drove with her towards Ogies.

He stopped near a certain farm and ordered her to get out of the vehicle and to lie face down.

Mlambo said the suspects allegedly took out the woman’s suitcase, placed it next to her and drove away.

“The victim asked another motorist for a lift to the police station in Leandra.

“The case was transferred to Kinross Police station,” said Mlambo.

Mlambo warned the community against hitchhiking and said it is unsafe, especially for women.
