MS Environmental Projects wants action to be taken against all those polluting water streams in the Govan Mbeki municipal jurisdiction.

The analysis that was carried out on water samples taken from various points in the Grootspruit on the July 26 was done according to the South African National Drinking Water Standard of 2015 (SANS241).

The standard specifies the quality of the acceptable drinking water defined in terms of the microbiological, physical aesthetic and the chemical determinants at the point of delivery.

The faecal coliform bacteria indicates the presence of sewage contamination of a waterway and the possible presence of other pathogenic organisms and e.Coli.

MS Environmental Projects opened a criminal case for the violation of human rights against Govan Mbeki Municipality at eMbalenhle Police Station three years ago.

“Our biggest worry and main concern is the continuous violation of the human right by the Govan Mbeki Municipality through the environmental injustice that our communities experience every day.

“The health hazard in which they have to live with their kids, elders and people living with other chronic diseases.

“Each day, residents within their homes, nearby churches and pre-schools all around the townships have to inhale contaminated air from openly flowing raw sewage,” said Fana Sibanyoni one of the MS Environmental Projects activists.

The organisation also lodged formal complains to the different government and non-governmental environmental organisations and the South African Human Rights Commission.

This environmental activist organisation said this after tests were conducted by H2OGURU where it was discovered that faecal coliform bacteria indicate the presence of sewage contamination of a waterway and the possible presence of other pathogenic organisms.

Tests on samples taken from Grootspruit and Secunda rivers show the water is not suitable for human or animal consumption or domestic use concludes a study.

Both river samples are definitely contaminated with raw sewage in the water.
