Residents hear suspected cable thieves in open field on outskirts of Secunda
Security companies are now often patrolling the area.
Residents living next to the open field near Simonsberg and Witzenberg streets suspect that cable thieves are very active in that area.
A resident informed AfriForum Security as well as other security companies about the activities they hear in the field next to their house at night.
This resulted in security services patrolling the area more.
“We woke up one night and saw a blue light shining outside our house, but the next morning we saw nothing when we walked around the garden,” said a resident.
However, a few nights later, the same resident again noticed a light that could have been a torch shining inside the bedroom window.

When they investigated the next morning, they noticed a trench that was dug in the open field just outside their palisades about a meter deep.
Jan du Plessis, the chairperson of AfriForum’s Secunda branch, said they have been patrolling the area since the incident occurred and are working together with various security companies in Secunda as well as the police to catch the thieves.
Cables in the area behind Bloekom and Echo streets have also already been stolen.
“The municipality used to cut the grass in the open field behind our house, if they can just do it again, crime will be less and visibility will be better,” said another resident.
