Community cleans up cemeteries in Ward 100, Cullinan

The community came together to clean up their local cemeteries.

The residents of Ward 100 are cleaning the local graveyards. The Love Your Burial Ground campaign was launched in June in Cullinan.

It aims to teach locals about the history of their burial grounds and join others in exploring what these plots can tell them about the past and its inhabitants.

Cemeteries have been around for centuries and often form an integral part of a local community, serving as a place of remembrance and commemorating loved ones.

The community started with the historical graves of the McHardy Family.

Visiting a cemetery can be an emotional experience for many people. The responsibility of tending to cemeteries often falls to people who inherited the role from previous generations.

“Although an honour, this is a challenging job which can take its toll physically and mentally,” said Ward 100 Clr Johannes Bekker.

“The campaign was established to help those charged with maintaining burial sites and to enforce the connection between cemeteries and communities.”

The campaign also allows people to learn more about their ancestors and to get involved in activities that celebrate and showcase the heritage of burial sites.

“We invite residents to get involved during our campaigns to maintain the cemeteries in Cullinan and Rayton. During June, we will clear overgrown areas and invasive species,” said Bekker.

The filling and cleaning of the graves in the next few months will prepare the areas for planting new flowers at the start of spring.
