Water levels at Grootdraai Dam stand at 93.1%
The majority of the listed dams in the Gert Sibande District recorded declines in volumes, with the exception of Vygeboom Dam which remained unchanged at 100.4%.
The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) encouraged the public to continue using available water wisely and sparingly as levels in the listed dams and water management areas in Mpumalanga continue to drop.
According to a statement from the department, the weekly state of reservoirs report, dated July 31, shows a 0.2% decrease from last week’s 97.8% to 97.6%, but the situation is still better than the same period last year when the level stood at 94.9%.
In the Water Management Areas (WMAs), the Olifants remained unchanged at 89.7%, which is better than the 84.4% recorded last year, and the Inkomati-Usuthu dropped from 97.8% to 97.7%, which is lower than the 98.6% recorded at the same time last year.
In terms of districts, the levels recorded mixed results, with Ehlanzeni increasing from 99.9% to 100.1%, Gert Sibande dropping from 95.6% to 95.1% and Nkangala remaining unchanged at 99.6%.

On the decline mode, Grootdraai dropped from 93.9% to 93.1%, Nooitgedacht from 96.4% to 95.6%, Jericho from 85.9% to 85.2%, Westoe from 70.0% to 68.5%, Morgenstond from 99.3% to 99.2% and Heyshope from 99.8% to 99.7%.
The department reminded the public that South Africa is a water-scarce country, therefore water conservation is key to reliable and sustainable supply and water security.
