Women’s Day in Cullinan
Women in Cullinan came together to celebrate Woman’s Day.
Semami Women’s Organisation which deals with mental health issues in Region 5 hosted a Women’s Day event on August 9 at the Cullinan Hotel.
This organisation was established in February 2022 by Dimakatso Mathebe and women around Cullinan who saw a need to form a women’s empowerment organisation.
They aim to teach women about mental health, social well-being, social entrepreneurship and other educational matters.
They also focus on working and collaborating with other organisations that deal with social transformation, education, and mental health and most importantly they identify the needs and priorities of women.
“Hosting an event like Woman’s Day will make a huge difference in the lives of women who are going through different situations,” said Dimakatso.
Cullinan celebrated women in the region who is making a difference in ECD, old age homes, schools, clinics, sports and the workplace.
Ward 100 Clr Johannes Bekker attended the event.
He said while women in the 21st century have leapt over hurdles of stereotypes, measures of restrictions still remain.
“I see the challenges of the 21st-century woman that differs from the traditional woman who strapped babies to their backs and carried bundles of firewood on their heads after a long day at the farm, women over the centuries regardless of society, are bound by a common misrepresentation.
“From violence to sexual abuse to gender pay gaps, career growths and restrictive reproductive rights, women and girls continue to face obstacles in achieving equality and thriving in modern society.
“Women play an essential role in creating a more peaceful and just world,” said Bekker.
