Ekangala residents march for mine jobs
The community members are tired of not being hired.
Almost 100 residents from Ekangala marched to mining companies in the Bronkhorstspruit area to demand work for locals.
The residents came from Tshwane’s Ward 104, which included sections such as Dark City, Mandela and the RDP area.
The march began at Masakhane Community Hall, Ekangala, and proceeded to Sasol Ekandustria, Canyon Coal, and Palesa Mine and ended at Kusile Power Station.
Jabulani Mokoena, a march organiser, said appointed marshals controlled the participants during the march and ensured the gathering proceeded peacefully.
The residents submitted memorandums of demands to each company.
Their demands included the employment of local residents, skills development and the elections of mine committees, which were delayed while the previous committees continued.
They claimed the people lacked confidence in the earlier committees.
They gave the mines and power stations seven working days to respond to the memorandums. The marchers threatened a follow-up march if the mines did not meet their demands.
