Grootdraai Dam water levels stand at 92.1%
The department reminded the public that South Africa remains a water-scarce country where every drop counts as water has no substitute.
The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) called on the public to be water-savvy and use water wisely and sparingly as levels in the listed dams and catchment areas in Mpumalanga continue to drop.
According to the weekly state of reservoirs report, dated August 21, the average dam levels recorded a further drop from 97.2% to 96.7%.
The Water Management Areas (WMA) also continued to drop, with the Olifants dropping from 89.2% to 88.7% and the Inkomati-Usuthu dropping from 97.2% to 97.0%.
In terms of levels per district, the three districts in the province, also recorded declines, with Ehlanzeni dropping from 99.7% to 99.5%, Gert Sibande from 94.4% to 94.2% and Nkangala from 99.4% to 98.5%.
In the Gert Sibande District, only Morgenstond Dam recorded some improvement, increasing from 98.9% to 99.0% and Westoe remained unchanged at 66.3%.
The rest of the dams in the district recorded declines in levels, with Grootdraai Dam dropping from 92.4% to 92.1%, Nooitgedacht dropping from 93.2% to 92.0%, Vygeboom from 100.4% to 100.3%, Jericho from 83.1% to 82.2% and Heyshope from 99.4% to 99.3%.

They said it was everybody’s responsibility to conserve the little available water by using it efficiently to ensure water security and reliable supply for current and future generations.
