Cogta Minister hands over eMbalenhle sewerage pump stations

Thembi Nkadimeng said the sewerage pump stations will change the levels of sanitation services for the communities of Wards 9 and 19.

The Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) Thembi Nkadimeng handed over the equipped sewerage pump stations in eMbalenhle, Ext 22 and 25 on May 17.

According to Nkadimeng, the project handover advances infrastructure development and exemplifies the government’s commitment to improving quality of life for all citizens.

She said the Municipal Infrastructure Grant (MIG), with a substantial funding allocation above R12m supported it.

“These sewerage pump stations will change the levels of sanitation services for the communities of Wards 9 and 19.

“The scope of the project, led by the Municipal Infrastructure Support Agent (MISA), includes engineering services, pump refurbishment, installation of electrical equipment, construction of stormwater drainage, and implementation of security measures, while it also ensures the efficient functioning of the sewerage pump stations and also addresses broader environmental and public health concerns,” said Nkadimeng.

Nhlakanipho Zuma, the executive mayor of Govan Mbeki Municipality, said they are going to build more pump stations to fight sewage spills in the area.

“Everyone is aware that our municipality received a fine of R200m in the Bethal Regional Court for contravention of environmental laws for disposing raw sewage into water sources like streams and rivers. We are addressing that and stopping sewage spills within our community.

“The municipality will also fix our waste water treatment works where our sewage goes,” said Zuma.

Previously, the Ext 22 residents of eMbalenhle accused the GMM of sewage spills flowing into their yards because of a non-functioning sewerage pump station. This was the same multi-million rand pump station built by Sasol through the Ikusasa project six years ago.
