eMbalenhle residents want to open fraud case against municipality
Community members gathered at the eMbalenhle Police Station today to open a fraud case with the Govan Mbeki Municipality (GMM).

They demanded the police stop the municipality from installing electricity smart meters an issue with the price of electricity units has been resolved.
The station commander, Colonel Khuselwa Matrose summoned the representatives from the municipality to address the crowd.
According to a community leader, Mzwakhe Sibeko, the municipality is charging residents much more per electricity unit than other municipalities.
Sibeko also complained that the total of units for the same amount fluctuates.
“If you buy R100 worth of electricity units today and then buy units for another R100 tomorrow, the total units differ,” said Sibeko.
The community also demanded the municipality stop blocking residents from buying pre-paid electricity because of their debt to the municipality.
The MMC for Revenue Enhancement, Jabu Zwane, and the MMC for Energy and Engineering, Lwandile Ziwele, listened to the community’s grievances on behalf of the Executive Mayor, Nhlakanipho Zuma.

Zwane told the community their grievances will be passed on to Zuma.
He appealed to the residents to attend community meetings that will be called by their ward councillors to tackle these problems in the coming days.
The residents said they will continue to seek legal opinion to hold the municipality accountable.
