Secunda bakers get creative with edible wafer paper

Baking enthusiasts explored new cake decorating techniques at the Suikerbekkies monthly meeting on June 17.

Members of the Suikerbekkies baking group gathered for their monthly meeting on June 17 at the NG Goedehoop Rots building, where creativity and cake decorating skills took centre stage as they explored the versatile world of edible wafer paper.

Members learnt how to apply edible wafer paper strips to baked and iced cakes, then decorate them with a variety of creative designs.

Wafer paper, a potato-based edible paper widely used in cake decorating, is known for its versatility, lightweight nature and ease of use.

It enables decorators to create intricate edible decorations, including delicate flowers, realistic petals, ruffles, sails, butterflies and textured effects that add elegance and dimension to cakes and desserts.

The hands-on session allowed participants to experiment with techniques for applying wafer paper to the cakes while sharing ideas and inspiration in a relaxed, supportive environment.

Suikerbekkies continues to provide a welcoming space for local baking enthusiasts eager to refine their decorating skills, learn new techniques, and connect with fellow creatives.

The next meeting will take place on August 12.
