ANC councillor in Govan Mbeki Municipality faces disqualification as candidate ahead of local government elections
The decision follows the circulation of a video on social media allegedly showing individuals distributing cash to influence voters to support the candidate during the ANC candidate selection process early this month.
As political parties prepare for the local government elections scheduled for November 4, candidate selection processes are underway across the country.
The ANC has disqualified a certain candidate in eMbalenhle from contesting the upcoming elections after the ANC Mpumalanga dispute resolution committee upheld a dispute against him.
According to the PDRC ruling, the said candidate was disqualified from participating in the ward councillor candidate selection process, subject to confirmation by the competent organisational authority in accordance with the ANC’s 2026 local government election guidelines.
The ruling further states that the matter has been referred to the ANC provincial secretary for onward referral to the appropriate disciplinary structures.

Following the emergence of the allegations, the ANC reiterated its firm stance against corruption and electoral misconduct.

ANC officials condemned the alleged distribution of money and alcohol to influence voters, urging party members and community members to report any incidents of misconduct during the candidate selection process.
ANC provincial secretary Muzi Chirwa has confirmed the disqualification of the councillor candidate from contesting the upcoming local government elections in Ward 29, unless he successfully appeals the decision.
Chirwa said that following the incident, the ANC Gert Sibande regional executive committee initiated disciplinary proceedings against the said candidate.
As a result, this candidate was set aside after being found to have acted in a manner that disadvantaged his competitors during the candidate selection process.
“I will be presenting the outcome of the disciplinary hearing to the ANC Provincial Executive Committee and that person also has the right to appeal the decision,” said Chirwa.
Ridge Times knows the identity of the candidate and asked him for comment. He pointed out that the noticed sent to the candidates did not specify the name of the person being disqualified.
