Little Paws Big Hearts (LPBH) began its outreach programmes in the townships 13 years ago.

With no idea what to expect, the non-profit organisation could not have known how much it would grow, how many lives it would touch, or the special relationships and friendships it would form along the way.

Many of its outreach programmes began by educating children on how to better care for their animals. Now, 13 years later, many of those children have grown into young adults who are studying, working and building their own lives.

One of those young men is Siyabonga Mkhabela from Holfontein, who was about 10 years old when LPBH first met him.

“At a young age, he loved his Greyhounds, and when he needed help, LPBH did whatever we could to help him,” said Sons Kempen, founder of LPBH.

Recently, LPBH received a call that one of Siyabonga’s dogs was sick and not doing well.

“We told him we would do what we could, although our veterinary account is currently frozen,” said Kempen.

After LPBH had done all it could to help, Siyabonga said something that touched their hearts deeply.

“He told us that we had always been kind to him and had helped him with his animals. Whenever we could, we took them to our vet and made sure they received the care they needed. He told us that we were good to him and that he was very thankful,” said Kempen.

Now, Siyabonga’s six-year-old brother, Junior Maile, is showing the same compassion for animals.

Siyabonga, who is now a working adult, told LPBH that he would like to make a monthly contribution towards their veterinary account.

He understands how expensive medical care is and knows how hard LPBH works to raise the funds needed to help animals such as his when they require medical attention.

“Our work is not in vain. Sometimes, the greatest reward isn’t money or recognition. It is knowing that somewhere along the way, you made a difference in a young person’s life, and years later, that kindness comes full circle. Siyabonga reminds us that kindness never goes unnoticed,” said Kempen.

LPBH’s veterinary account has been frozen, and an appeal has gone out to help the non-profit animal organisation settle its arrears so it can continue its mission of helping animals in need.
