Too many stop signs

Traffic lights should be installed to assist in the flow of traffic and to avoid unnecessary stops.

What a frustration to drive through Bethal and have to stop every 180m at a stop street for nine times in a distance of 1,7km on the N17-highway.

I cannot believe that the residents of Bethal are content to put up with such an unnecessary old system in these modern times when traffic lights have been around for more than 50 years.

Removing a third of these stop streets will surely still prevent speeding on this road if this is the only reason for all the stop streets.

Having to stop at all these intersections has the following negative effects:

* Higher fuel costs for the thousands of motorists that use this road every day.

* Higher wear and tear on vehicles.

* Increased travelling time.

* Increased carbon monoxide pollution.

* Increased noise pollution.

Traffic lights should be installed to assist in the flow of traffic and to avoid unnecessary stops.

Some may argue that the cost of traffic light installations is too costly and the ratepayers of Bethal cannot afford it, but can the ratepayers and other motorists using this road afford the higher fuel cost and wear and tear caused by having to stop and pull away at every stop street for nine times?
