Nelson wins Gert Sibande Chess Flash Mob tournament
“Chess helps expand the creative thinking of children, especially in mathematics and science,” says Dr Sias Viljoen, president of the club.
SECUNDA – Gert Sibande Chess Club hosted the Flash Mob Tournament at Secunda Mall on Saturday, 17 October to create awareness about the club.
“Chess is not always serious, it can be fun as well.
“It helps expand the creative thinking of children, especially in mathematics and science,” said Dr Sias Viljoen, president of the club.
The Gert Sibande Chess Club began in 2011 and consists of young and adults members.
They currently have 120 registered members and 65 children from their club will represent the district during the South African Junior Chess Championships in Cape Town in January next year.
“We still need more players and if the players do well, they get Gert Sibande colours and represent the region,” said Dr Viljoen.
The winners for the tournament are: Nelson Tshoba (first), Mfundo Masiye (second) and Leisa Mphosi (third).
