Down Syndrome athletes represent the country

The athletes will participate in Futsal, Table Tennis, Tennis, Swimming and Athletics.

HIGHVELD – Down Syndrome athletes will represent the country in Florence, Italy from 15 to 22 July.

The team will have a send-off function in Boksburg on 11 July and will depart from OR Tambo International Airport on 14 July.

Ms Adeline Mbhele, SASAII treasurer and Osizweni Special School’s principal, said they are proud that athletes from Mpumalanga will be taking part in the Trisome (World) Games.

The athletes will participate in futsal, table tennis, tennis, swimming and athletics.

One of the athletes, Sarah Rakgalakane from Wolvenkop Special School, represented South Africa in Portugal in 2012 and won silver medals in the 200m and 800m.

She participated in Bloemfontein in the World Games last year and brought home two silver medals for the 200m and the 4x400m relay.
