Former Moroka Swallows player Lizo Mjempu is Zone Mavo’s coach.

eMBALENHLE – Zone Mavo FC was promoted to play at the Mpumalanga ABC Motsepe League after being crowned SAB League champions in June.

Mr Vusi Thanjekwayo, one of the directors of Zone Mavo, said the team was established in 2008 and they began to participate in festive games.

They then decided to play for the SAB League.

During the 2013/2014 season, they qualified for play offs, but did not make it.

They also played in the finals of the Nedbank Cup in 2015.

They lost against Phiva Young Stars which was already playing in the Motsepe League.

Phiva lost to Jomo Cosmos.

Mr Thanjekwayo said they have already played five friendly games in preparation of their league.

“Though we had a difficult journey, we are now at another level where we are fighting to reach the National First Division which is the first layer of professional football,” said Mr Thanjekwayo.

He also mentioned that they have a supporters’ club and those interested in supporting the team, can check out their Facebook page, FC Zone Mavo, and also ask for forms in order to get membership cards.

They have appointed the former Moroka Swallows player Lizo Mjempu as the coach for the team.

Mr Peter Lephoto, also a director of the team, thanked their supporters.

The team currently does not have an official sponsor and urged individuals and businesses to assist them in whatever way possible whether in the form of a soccer kit or financially.

They thanked Shisela and Mavutha Constructors for their contributions.

“We are doing this for the community,” said Mr Lephoto.

“We also thank the Govan Mbeki Municipality for its contributions as they also negotiated with Megabus to give a discount to our supporters.”

They also need assistance with transport.

Mr Lephoto thanked Safa Gert Sibande and LFA for assisting them during the preparations of the play offs.

Mr Bafana Nhleko, Deputy Chairperson: Govan Mbeki Local Football Association, said they are happy with Zone Mavo’s achievement and they wish them all the best in the Motsepe League.
