City Boys are the GS champs

SOCCER – Gert Sibande SAB League, formerly known as Castle League’s, top eight teams were fighting for the championship in Stream A.

The games were played at Kinross Sasol Club on Saturday, 24 September.

The regional league was divided into two, because of the number of teams.

Stream A consisted of teams from Dr Pixley ka Seme, Lekwa, Dipaleseng and Govan Mbeki Municipality.

Stream B comprised Msukaligwa, Chief Albert Luthuli and Mkhondo Municipality.

Thistle Grove FC went to the finals after they beaten Batlokwa FC 2-1 and they also beat Juventus 3-2.

Their final match was against City Boys and they were fighting for the championship of the league.

Both teams were trying to defend goals from entering their nets.

They failed to score in the first half of the match as several chances of finishing the goals were missed.

During the second half both focused on defending goals instead of striking forward into the nets.

That led to City Boys capitalising on the counter attack and scoring a goal that led to them winning the cup.

Both teams were delivered two yellow cards in the second half.

Mr Nkululeko Nzekeni, secretary of Gert Sibande Football Association, said the champions received R8 000, a trophy and medals.
