Sasol relay good for healthy rivalry

The Sasol interdepartmental relay was held on 12 November in Secunda.

SECUNDA – Sasol limited hosted the 28th annual Interdepartmental Sasol Relay at the Sasol Recreation Club on Saturday, 12 November.

This relay is an important part of the Sasol team building calendar when various teams from each of the many different departments take apart on the day.

According to Ms Sizakele Masilela, communications officer for Secunda Chemicals Operations, 1 827 Sasol employees participated in the three different categories.

“Altogether, 156 teams entered the running race with six members per team, and teams could be single gender or mixed and 247 three-person walking teams entered and 50 three-member cycling teams took part.

According to Mr Abednego Sibanyoni from Sasol Marathon Club, the day was a success and he was excited about the brilliant times that the runners made in the 6km relay course.

Mr Lucky Kgatle, senior vice president: Sasol Mining, and Mr Vishal Pooran, vice president: Real Estate Services, were the special guests.

The winning team in the men’s runners category was the Gas Circuit A-team who finished six laps of the 6km course in 2:32,8.

Second was the team from SCO Site Services – Machine Shop who finished in 2:38,35.

The women’s running winners are the Group Technology – Catch me if you can team, who finished in 3:22,27, with Water and Ash Running Divas and Water and Ash Springbok Girls respectively coming second and third with times of 3:38,57 and 4:23,3.

The mixed team winner was the SMWC Directional Drilling team 2:47,30, followed by the Technology Support -Gas Production team with a time of 3:1,19 and the Proconics Runners in 3:3,35,

The SCO Site Services teams dominated the men’s walking race with the Machine Shop B team winning with a time of 2:2,43, the Springbok team coming in second with a time of 2:9,0 and the Amabhubest team coming third with a time of 2:9,9..

Even the women’s wining team came from SCO Site Services, with the EMS5 team winning in a time of 2:21,36.

The Brandspruit Phakama Divas were second with 2:27,19 and the Syferfontein African Girls coming third with 2:30,34.

The mixed team walking race winners was the SMCW Tigers with a time of 2:9,3.

The SCS Ukhozi team followed them with a time of 2:10,6.

Finally the Surface Services Industrialist team came third with a time of 2:14,9.

The cycling winners are the Finance and IM Tasmanian Devils who finished the relay in 1:9,59, The Nitro Fertilizer 333 and Proconics team were in a dead heat for second and third with a mere 18 seconds of difference between them with times of respectively 1:15,21 and 1:15,39.

Sasol Mining won the award for having the best spirit, and the Environments team won the best dressed award.
