Graceland and Sanabo serve up boxing feast

SECUNDA – Nearly 200 boxers battled for the title of elite champion in their respective weight categories over the past week at Graceland.

The South African Boxing Organisation (Sanabo) held its annual national Elite Championships here for boxers of 19 years and older from 3 to 7 July.

Mr Andile Mofu, president of Sanabo, said the fact that the tournament was held in Secunda this year was significant.

“It is 27 years since Sanabo was formed right here in this very town. Secunda is where it all began.”

Mr Mofu said the Elite Championship is a great platform for selecting the boxers who his management believe have the potential to be groomed into athletes that can represent South Africa at the 2020 Olympic Games.

“I am truly impressed with the Mpumalanga athletes. Due to a lack of interest in the sport, boxing took a large dip in the province and is only now slowly making a comeback. Despite this, the Mpumalanga fighters showed huge potential.”

Mr Mofu said Sanabo will soon begin its boxing league to ensure that the boxers are active and stay in shape throughout the rest of the year.

Three of Mpumalanga’s boxers obtained bronze medals at the Elite Championships.

Two of Mpumalanga’s fighters hail from eMbalenhle. They are Sphamandla Msibi in the middleweight division and Manqoba Magubane in the lightweight division.

Sonwabile Marenene from Eastern Cape keeps a feisty Sabelo Mdletshe from KwaZulu-Natal at bay in the ring.
