Secunda gets first-ever indoors shooting range
The range offers a shooting distance of 15 metres and is ideal for handguns and smaller calibre weapons
SECUNDA – The first-ever indoors shooting range in Secunda recently opened its doors in the basement of the Lifestyle Centre in Ext 22.
The Trigger Shooting range is the latest addition to the Trigger Shooting Training Academy owned by the Van der Westhuizen-family.
Ms Elsabé van der Westhuizen is well-known as a firearms competency facilitator and her son, Neels, is a weapons specialist and advanced and tactical shooting instructor.
Mr Van der Westhuizen said the indoor range is catering to a huge need that existed in the community.
“Residents do not always have the time or the means to travel to one of the ranges outside of town. Now those who want to practice or hone their shooting skills can do use the indoors range anytime between 11am and 7pm from Monday to Saturday without worrying about the weather, poor light or travelling too far,” he explained.
The range is certified by the NRCS, and Trigger Shooting Academy is certified by the Professional Firearm Training Council (PFTC) and is also police accredited.
The range offers a shooting distance of 15 metres and is ideal for handguns and smaller calibre weapons, although larger calibres can be considered.
The range is wide enough for two to three shooters.
This means a few friends or an individual can book the range for an hour at a time during which either Mr Van der Westhuizen or Ms Van Westhuizen will be the range official.
They want the community to benefit from the shooting range and have therefore decided not to establish a shooting club, but to allow all legal gun owners to make use of the range.
“I want to make people more aware of the benefits of firearms and how to use it wisely.
“Besides using guns as a means of self-defense, shooting is also a great sport.
“That is why I also plan to begin with fun days where youngsters can enjoy shooting their pellet guns in a safe environment. “
Mr Van der Westhuizen said it year-end functions with a shooting session are very popular and great for team building.
According to the Van der Westhuizens, this is just the first step in a larger plan they have envisioned for Trigger Shooting Training Academy.
