Young athlete from Secunda is the winner of 800m at championship

Aphiwe wants to run even faster next year.

Aphiwe Shabangu (13), a learner at Oranjegloed Primary School and member of the Speedsters training group, excelled at the Sub Youth Interprovincial Championship held in Germiston on Saturday, November 27.

He won the 800m race in a time of 2 min 14 sec and finished sixth in the 200m.

Aphiwe began with athletics when he was nine years old and took part in 60m and 80m.

He also took part in cross country races when he was younger, but now his main focus is athletics.

He trains at the Speedsters training group with his coach, Ms Janine Swanepoel at least four times weekly and his aim is to improve on his personal best in the 800m and run it in 2 min 8 sec.

Ms Swanepoel’s assistant coach, Ms Elmarie Phillipson, help Aphiwe with his endurance training.

Aphiwe is going to Hoërskool Secunda next year and wants to become an engineer or a professional athlete when he grows up.
