Wian Strydom from Standerton sets his mind on bigger things

“Wian’s strength lies in his mindset.”

Wian Strydom from Hoërskool Standerton has already established himself as a rising star in the tennis fraternity.

This player has succeeded in earning a place in the Mpumalanga BU/16-team.

His coach Mathew Khumalo from Team Me Up Academy, said on March 2 that Wian has been under his wings since 2015.

“Covid 19 however, put a stop to the training, but through sheer hard work, Wian has progressed to provincial level,” Khumalo also said.

“Wian’s strength lies in his mindset.”

This youngster said that meeting new and different people is what he enjoys most about tennis.

“Although my backhand needed more training, it developed into my strongest weapon.”

He likes to watch Serbian, Novak Djokovic and Australian, Ashleigh Barty going full-out.

Wian also plays rugby at SHS in the centre position.

He practises his tennis between three to four hours daily.

Khumalo hinted at a scholarship for Wian in the pipeline.

“I would like to be a professional tennis player one day,” Wian said before getting ready for a match.
