Many have opted to live off waste from rubbish dumps and dust bins.
They sometimes compensate for a lack of income by way of unlawful activities or recycling of some sort and also brave the elements.
But, who takes the responsibility of looking out for these people?
Many residents have ceased to support these individuals because of the times that have changed.
A resident said: “It has become almost impossible to identify and help these people.
“Your charity becomes their stupor, they are no longer interested in money for a meal.”
Numerous calls to the Standerton branch of the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) have proved fruitless with regards to whom is responsible for the homeless people in our area.
