City Power urges residents to help combat infrastructure vandalism and cable theft
The theft and vandalism of electricity infrastructure remains one of the biggest contributors to network instability in Roodepoort.
City Power (CP) has renewed its call for residents to help combat the vandalism and theft of electricity infrastructure.
CP spokesperson Isaac Mangena said infrastructure vandalism and theft remain among the biggest threats to the reliability of the electricity network in Roodepoort.
“Cable theft, vandalism, the theft of equipment and damage to our electrical infrastructure result in prolonged power outages, increased repair costs, and the diversion of critical technical and financial resources away from planned maintenance and infrastructure upgrades,” he said.
Mangena said that although City Power has strengthened its security measures and partnerships with law enforcement agencies, infrastructure-related crime continues to undermine service delivery and place additional pressure on already constrained resources.

“It is for this reason that CP continues to strengthen its Community Partnership Programme, which promotes collaboration between businesses, residential associations and community policing forums to help safeguard critical electricity infrastructure, improve information sharing, and support the fight against infrastructure-related crime.
“Public awareness and customer education also form an integral part of CP’s infrastructure protection strategy.
“Ongoing awareness campaigns encourage residents to promptly report incidents of cable theft, vandalism and suspicious activity.”

“These initiatives raise awareness of the significant safety and service delivery risks associated with infrastructure crime while reinforcing the shared responsibility of protecting public infrastructure,” he said.
He added that CP acknowledges residents’ concerns over damaged electricity infrastructure and recurring cable theft.
“We apologise for the inconvenience caused and appreciate the community’s patience and continued support as we work to restore and protect the electricity network.”
