Rugby rucks and hockey strikes fire up Jozi fests

Three of Johannesburg’s most prominent school sports festivals will return over the Easter period in 2026, with King Edward VII School (KES), St Stithians College and St John’s College hosting major tournaments that attract teams from across the country.
The festivals, which take place between late March and early April, form a key part of the national school sports calendar and draw thousands of players and spectators to Joburg each year.
KES Easter Festival
King Edward VII School will host the 22nd Annual Easter Festival from April 2 to 6 at the campus in Houghton.
The four-day festival will feature fixtures on Thursday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday, bringing together a wide cross-section of schools from across SA to compete in rugby and hockey, making it one of the country’s largest school sports festivals.
An action-packed opening day on Thursday will include matches featuring the Golden Lions U16 Girls teams, adding an exciting dimension to the start of the festival. The festival provides valuable early-season competition for participating teams while giving supporters the opportunity to watch several of the country’s leading school sides in action over the Easter long weekend.
Participating schools will represent the Eastern Cape, Western Cape, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng, ensuring a strong national presence and a highly competitive festival.
Saints SportsFest
Meanwhile, St Stithians College in Sandton will host the 42nd edition of the Saints SportsFest, continuing a tradition that dates back to 1984.
The Prep Festival will take place from March 26 to 28, while the College Festival will run on April 1, 2, 4 and 6.
Organisers expect about 2 500 participants and more than 70 000 spectators to attend the event across both weekends.
More than 70 teams, including both boys’ and girls’ sides, will compete in a range of sports including football, hockey, netball, rugby, squash and tennis.
The festival will also feature a Family Fun Run or walk on Easter Monday, which forms part of the event’s family-focused programme.
St John’s College Easter Rugby Festival
At St John’s College in Houghton, preparations are underway for the 29th St John’s College Easter Rugby Festival, which will be played on April 2, 4 and 6.
The three-day festival is one of South Africa’s best-known schoolboy rugby festivals and attracts teams and supporters from across the country, including Australia and New Zealand this year.
Matches are played in a festival format that focuses on participation and showcasing emerging talent rather than determining an overall champion.
Attendance at the 2025 event reached nearly 13 000 spectators, reflecting the continued popularity of the festival among rugby supporters.
Together, the three festivals highlight the depth of school sport in Johannesburg, with rugby remaining a central attraction while other codes also feature prominently.
With teams travelling from multiple provinces, the events are expected to again draw large crowds and provide an early-season platform for emerging school athletes to compete at a high level.
