Why so dark on Christiaan de Wet Road?

ROODEPOORT – It is still unclear why there are no streetlights on Christiaan de Wet Road for half of the road.

Driving on Christiaan de Wet Road in Roodepoort in the daytime is no problem as this road is in a very good condition. The problem, however, is when it gets dark as there are no streetlights for approximately 4km.

If one is driving from Clearwater Mall towards Radiokop, there are only street lights across from iJump, then there is no light for a kilometre going towards Allen’s Nek and Radiokop, but even here there are only two streetlights. In total, there is a 4km stretch on Christiaan de Wet with no lights.

There, however, are many businesses on the side of Christiaan de Wet Road, but these do little to ensure proper lighting.

Hloni Motloung from City Power thanked Roodepoort Northsider for bringing this to City Power’s attention. Motloung urged members of the public to report any faulty streetlights to City Power.

City Power spokesperson, Yumna Sheik said that streetlights enable the community to have visibility when they drive and walk at night. The lights also deter potential crime that would otherwise take place in dark or poorly lit areas. “Improved street lighting contributes significantly to the reduction of crime,” said Sheik. City Power could, however, not give a reason as to why there are no streetlights on Christiaan de Wet Road.
