MVP Cole

Local golfer does it again

Local golfer Cole Stevens helped the Central Gauteng Golf Union seize the 2016 South African U/19 Inter-Provincial (IPT) title. The tournament was hosted by the Mpumalanga Golf Union at the White River Country Club, where Cole played alongside seven other junior golfers from clubs such as Ruimsig, Rand Park and Eagle Canyon, showing off the strong talent from the West Rand.

During the week-long tournament, Central Gauteng went head to head against and crushed KwaZulu-Natal by 8–4 and beat Southern Cape 7–5 in the first round. The team then had a second round bye before beating the Free State 8–4 and playing Western Province to a 6–6 draw in the third round of play.

In the fourth round, Central Gauteng finished top of the log with nine points after beating Ekurhuleni 8–4. For the final round, Natal, Gauteng North, Southern Cape and Ekurhuleni had to battle it out for the right to compete in the final against Central Gauteng and for final log standings. Although Central Gauteng had already won the title by finishing ahead of the pack, it was Gauteng North who reached the final and they made it count as they beat Central Gauteng 7,5–4,5. Cole was awarded MVH’s ‘Most Valuable Player’ of the tournament for his top performances which helped his team achieve victory at the White River Country Club.
