Crippling taxi strike called off

Taxi strike called off

Taxi commuters can breathe a sigh of relief after the nationwide taxi strike was called off. The strike was planned for next week Wednesday and would have hit the commuters of Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape the hardest.

Thousands of motorists were also stranded when Quantum taxis and trucks blocked major routes. The strike that crippled these provinces last month was called because of Santaco’s claim that the government’s failure to subsidise the taxi industry is killing it.

The taxi association will be meeting with the Minister of Transport, Joe Maswanganye and air their grievances. However, commuters have been warned that if talks do not go well, a nationwide strike will still be on the cards.
