Roodepoort clean-up well supported
Everyone was rewarded with something to eat and drink after their hard work
“In only one hour, we had already made a remarkable difference,” said Anri Joubert.
Anri, a Miss Earth South Africa 2018 semifinalist, joined hands with the Grade 7 learners from Laerskool Die Ruiter, Irini Moutzouris (Miss Earth SA 2017), Vuyo Shongwe (health and fitness coach), Hammar Controls, Gauteng Dairy, Mlilo, friends and family to clean up at an illegal dumping site in Dame Street, Roodepoort.
“Pikitup came to collect the more than 100 bags of litter that was collected on the day, and, afterwards every volunteer received a boerewors roll, and a refreshing drinking yoghurt,” she said.
Anri added that this event formed part of the #WasteStopsWithMe campaign that was launched by Miss Earth SA, and explained, “One of our objectives is to raise awareness about plastic pollution, and what can be done to minimise it. Another campaign that is also close to our hearts is the A Re Sebetseng project, which was launched by Pikitup, to ensure a cleaner Johannesburg. We would like to encourage each and every South African citizen to do their part by joining the campaign, which takes place every third Saturday of the month, throughout the city.”
She concluded by saying, “If you are aware of an illegal dumping site in your area, contact Pikitup on 086 056 2874 or 011 375 5555.”
