Laerskool Helderkruin actress holds school’s name high at first-ever World Monologue Games
World Monologue Games is only in its first year but already attracted thousands of international performers.
Local actor Estée-Mari Smit has been selected for the World Monologue Games Regional Finals, one of 14 global events featuring the best international competitors.
Theatres and film sets around the world are closed for business but this didn’t stop Estee’s passion for performing. The Laerskool Helderkruin learner, who is part of the Linda Theron Drama Studio, submitted an entry to the World Monologue Games, a global event with competitors from over 80 countries vying for prizes and glory.
When Estée-Mari received an email announcing she had made it to the Regional Finals, she was over the moon and said, “I’m so excited to be competing for my country in this amazing event. It’s an honour to be selected.”
World Monologue Games is only in its first year but already attracted thousands of international performers. Event founder Pete Malicki from Sydney in Australia said, “Covid-19 has had a devastating effect on people’s lives, the global economy and many different industries including arts and entertainment. I wanted to create an opportunity for actors around the world to show how resilient they are. The response was massive – I’m not sure if this many actors have participated in one event before!”
Estee entered four monologues and two made it to the Regional Finals; Pippie goes to school and I am hungry. “I really love performing these pieces. They are both so different. Pippie goes to school is a fun and silly piece and I enjoy that tremendously. I am hungry is a dramatic piece written by my drama teacher, Linda Theron,” Estee concluded.
The Regional Finals will be live-streamed in August and September 2020, with the winners in each category competing in the Global Finals in front of hundreds of thousands of performing arts fans.
