A responsible way to get rid of bulky waste

Once a call is logged, the responsible Depot Manager will book the call and arrange for the free, once-a-month bulky waste service to collect the waste.

The City of Johannesburg (CoJ) waste management entity, Pikitup, is reminding residents of their free bulky waste removal service in the hopes of minimising illegal dumping.

Many residents do not have the time or means to dispose of bulky waste or excess rubbish alone, which either results in illegal dumping, or waste piling up in their homes. In order to encourage residents to recycle more and dispose of their waste in a responsible manner, Pikitup introduced this initiative in 2016, whereby they will collect bulk waste at no charge.

This initiative not only aims to promote recycling and responsible waste disposal, but also to divert recyclable materials away from landfill sites, thus increasing the landfill space and extending the lifespan of each existing landfill. Materials falling within the bulky waste category are large items such as mattresses, furniture, fridges and large electronics such as washing machines and dishwashers.

Residents who do have suitable transport are welcome to go to their nearest garden site to dispose of these bulky items, or alternatively, calls can be logged at any Pikitup depot to have the item(s) collected.

Once a call is logged, the responsible Depot Manager will book the call and arrange for the free, once-a-month bulky waste service to collect the waste.

If you have your own transport, the Panorama Garden Site is situated just off Jim Fouche Road in Panorama AH and can easily be found on Google Maps.

It is open from 8am to 5pm from Monday through to Sunday.

To request the removal service, the Roodepoort Pikitup Depot can be contacted on 087 357 1564 or the Randburg Depot can be contacted on 087 357 1327.

Illegal dumping is a serious issue.

If you are aware of any illegal dumping in your area, please report it by calling 011 375 5555 or sending a WhatsApp to 082 779 1361.
