Taking the baton for Cupcakes of HOPE

Stationed at the park on Circle Street, the two brought sugary joy to the community with expertly baked and beautifully decorated cupcakes.

For a child facing the fear of a shortened life or a parent the possibility of unfulfilled ambitions, hope can be the driver of dreams and the impetus of perseverance. Cupcakes may be a simple treat but when used as a gift of positivity they can make a world of difference.

Aided by trusty assistant Karin Dippenaar, Hennie Matthews carried the torch onwards for Cupcakes of HOPE. Stationed at the park on Circle Street, the two brought sugary joy to the community with expertly baked and beautifully decorated cupcakes. Past years have seen the charity initiative that aims to raise awareness for children with cancer flood shopping centres with their message, but the ongoing events of 2020 have mandated a different approach.

Whether in a crowd or an open field, supporters of the initiative would not be prevented from dishing out the joy. Over 300 donated baked balls of doughy goodness were snapped up by passing residents. “It is an honour to form part of such a worthy cause. By purchasing a cupcake, we not just create awareness around cancer, but funds are raised for children with cancer,” said a beaming Hennie.

Driven by the desire to make a difference in the lives of children, Hennie and Karin believe prevention is better than cure saying, “Early detection is key, so get checked regularly”.

In only his second year, Hennie is hooked on the message, stating, “Children are our future. Do good and be the change you wish to see in the world.”
