West Rand Toastmasters’ final online meeting
While it seemed that not many of the returning club members were able to attend, the small meeting still brought joy to the public speakers.
The West Rand Toastmasters were beyond excited to welcome two new members and three guests to their 489th meeting on Thursday, 17 September.
While it seemed that not many of the returning club members were able to attend, the small meeting still brought joy to the public speakers.
Alwyn Asa showed his professionalism by taking on the roles of Toastmaster and Acting President, standing in for the club’s president, Thato Majela, who shared his regrets that he could not be there. Alwyn welcomed the small group of people to the evening’s meeting, before taking a step back to allow Malcom Harris to propose the Toast of the Evening.
Glen Campbell lightened the mood and spread some much-needed positivity in her role as Joke master. The laughs she drew from the audience were the prefect segue into the evening’s first, and only, prepared speech which was presented by Lynette Harris.
Being evaluated by Michael Glencross, Lynette delivered an entertaining speech which she had titled ‘Image’. She began by speaking about the very personal questions she once had to answer while filling in the forms for a clothing account. Her story ended with the recollection of when she won a makeover and was flown to Durban to receive her prize, and when she returned home, her mother didn’t even recognise her.
After a brief tea and coffee break, the evening’s Table Topics Chair, Stephanie Watkins, approached the virtual lectern to give the three guests and two new members their subjects for the impromptu speeches.
Each of these five people used their imagination to the best of their abilities and transported themselves to the middle of the ocean where they were stuck on a raft from an abandoned ship. Each member had 30 seconds to present their speeches and explain their thought process while they were stuck on the raft. After their speeches, Stephanie used her evaluations to cleverly point out their unique personality types.
After an enjoyable and positive online meeting, the Toastmasters bade farewell to each other until their next meeting which will be held at the Discovery Bowling Club.
